The quickbar

The bar above the keyboard holds the buttons you choose. Add, reorder and remove them, keep several quickbars, and let the Math and Lists bars switch in automatically.

Updated for iOS 1.65

The quickbar

Design Intent: The keyboard's top row belongs to you. Put the five things you actually use there and let the rest go.

What is on it

  • Left to right: hide keyboard, undo and redo, then a scrolling capsule of your buttons, ending in a + that adds more.
  • Fresh installs start with Format keyboard, Math keyboard, Checklist, Dictate, Capture text and Keywords. Every button is described in Quickbar buttons.
  • A button whose keyboard is already up closes it when tapped again.

Adding, removing and reordering

  • Tap + to open the Quickbar sheet. Tap a tile to add it ("… added to your bar"). The live roster at the top can be dragged to reorder, or dragged off to remove.
  • On the bar itself, press and hold a button to lift it: the bar expands into a grid, drag to a new spot or drag away to remove. This is undoable.

Several quickbars

  • You can keep more than one bar. The Quickbar sheet has chips for Default, your named bars and New quickbar (a new one starts empty). A chip's menu offers Rename, Disable auto set, Disable and Delete quickbar.
  • Two built-in bars come along: Math (the Math keyboard) and Lists (Outdent, Indent, Move line up/down, Cycle list type, Move checked items, Delete checked items). Built-in bars can be disabled but not deleted.
  • Swipe the bar up for the next quickbar and down for the previous ("Quickbar: …"), or add the Swap quickbar button.

Bars that follow the note

  • A bar can switch in automatically: the Math bar on a math note, the Lists bar on a list note or while the cursor is on a list item. When the context ends the bar returns to the one you last chose.
  • Switching bars yourself overrides auto mode until the context next changes. Turn a bar's automatic switching off with Disable auto set.

Double button bar

  • With Double Button Bar on, the first three buttons stay beside undo/redo and the rest spread across a second, swipeable bar above the keyboard.
