Math

Lines ending in = are calculated in place. Define variables with name: value, use ans for the previous answer, and convert units and currencies.

Updated for iOS 1.65

Math

Design Intent: Write the sum the way you would say it. Numbers in a sentence are still numbers.

Calculations

  • Type math on the first line. Any line that ends in = is calculated and the answer is written after it; change the line and the answer updates.
  • Words between the numbers are ignored, so $4.25 for lychee + $21 for moon cakes = works.
  • ans stands for the previous answer above the line. Rename it in Settings › Editor › Previous answer word.
  • Lines starting with // are comments and are not calculated. Answers are protected: you cannot type over them.
  • The Math keyboard puts operators, ans, units and variables under your thumb — see Special keyboards. The Math quickbar switches in automatically on a math note.

Variables

  • A line like guests: 5 defines a variable. Use it anywhere below: guests * 34 =. Change the definition and every answer that depends on it updates.
  • A variable's value can itself be a calculation: daily: hourly rate * 8 =.
  • The Math keyboard's Vars sheet lists the note's variables and can add a new one.

Conversions and currency

  • 89 miles to km =, 32 oz to lbs =, 4" 2' to cm = — distance, mass, volume, area and temperature.
  • $32 USD to JPY = converts currency. $23 = on its own converts from your primary to your secondary currency; $5 BTC = converts into your primary. Rates are fetched when the app is online.
